Six anchorages

The six stops a Cayman trip gets built around.

A sandbar full of wild rays, a shallow shelf covered in sea stars, a reef you can stand beside, and a cave system for the day the wind turns. Each one, and the best way to reach it.

The North Sound

Three stops, one hour of open water.

Almost every boat leaving Grand Cayman’s north coast runs the same three anchorages in the same shallow lagoon. Knowing what each one actually is decides which trip you book.

The Sandbar

Stingray City is a shallow bar in the middle of the North Sound where the water stops at your chest. Southern stingrays have gathered there since fishermen cleaned their catch over the side, and they still come in when the engines cut. They are wild animals on an open bank, not an exhibit in a pen. There is no path, no jetty and no walk-in entrance: you get there on a boat or you do not get there.

North shore

Starfish Point

A sand shelf off the island’s north coast where cushion sea stars sit in a foot of clear water, close enough to the beach that small children can wade to them. One rule matters and half the visitors break it: a sea star lifted into the air drowns. Look at it in the water, take the photograph at the surface, put it back on the sand it came from. Most sandbar boats stop here second or third.

Two hundred metres on

Coral Gardens

The reef sits just beyond the sandbar in six to ten feet of water, shallow enough that someone in a flotation vest sees the same sergeant majors, parrotfish and passing turtles the divers do. It is the stop that turns a stingray photograph into an actual snorkel, and it is the reason three-stop trips cost a little more than two-stop ones.

A boat day, in order

How a North Sound morning actually runs.

After dark

The same water you swam in lights up at night.

Bioluminescent dinoflagellates live in the shallow bays off Grand Cayman’s north coast, and they flash blue when anything disturbs them. Boats run out on the dark nights either side of a new moon, kill the engine, and let you put a hand in.

What it costs

Cayman prices split cleanly in three.

A seat on a shared boat, a guided day with a ticket in it, or the whole vessel to yourself. The third band is quoted per boat, not per head — six people make it look very different.

Under $100
35 tours

One seat on a shared sandbar boat, plus entry tickets and the rum tasting. This is the everyday Cayman day out.

$100–400
27 tours

Night snorkels, the cave tours, e-bike mornings and the small-group boats that cap numbers at a dozen.

$400 and up
48 tours

Priced for the whole boat, not per person: private charters, sport-fishing days and yachts. Split six ways it lands near the shared-seat price.

Off the water

Grand Cayman keeps going when you step off the boat.

The East End has a cave system full of stalactites, an eighteenth-century great house on the bluff above the sea, and a botanic park where the blue iguanas live. Add the harbour distillery and you have a full day that never leaves dry land.

Before the flight, not the beach chair

These four do not wait for your itinerary.

Most of Grand Cayman can be booked from a beach chair the day before. These cannot: the moon, the tide book and a single captain’s calendar decide when they run.

  1. 01Night Bioluminescence Snorkel TourRuns only on the dark nights around a new moon. The lunar calendar picks the dates, not your holiday.
  2. 02Cayman Crystal Caves Tour in Grand CaymanGuided groups leave on fixed times and the caves cap numbers. Arriving without a slot means waiting for the next one.
  3. 03Private, luxury, custom charters to Stingray City, Snorkeling & MoreOne captain, one boat, one group a day. The good ones are gone weeks out in high season.
  4. 04Private Charter Reef fishing, Stingray City, Snorkel, MangrovesAn offshore day is one group’s booking. Once a boat is taken it is taken, and there are not many of them.
Norwester days

A norwester shuts the sandbar. The island does not shut with it.

Winter cold fronts push a swell into the North Sound and boat crews cancel rather than anchor in it. That is the day for the caves in the East End, an e-bike along the ironshore, or a driver and the whole island in an afternoon. None of them care about the sea state.
