- Jamaica lies south of Cuba and west of Haiti.
- 146 miles long, Jamaica has a number of cays to the south and southeast.
- The Blue Mountains are toward the east with the highest peak reaching 7402 ft.
- The two basic climates are tropical and arid. When warm trade winds blow on the Mountains the result is the northern and eastern side of the mountains have a tropical climate where as the southern and western sides of the mountains have a more arid climate.
- The temperature is about the same year round, approximate 80 deg F. However, in the mountains the temperature can decrease to about 50 deg F.

Given that Jamaica is small island in the Caribbean, it's astonishing what a strong influence its culture has had on the rest of the wold. Jamaica music includes reggae, ska, mento, rocksteady, dub and more. It's influences include punk rock which includes reggae and ska. Jamaica's music also influences rap and hip-hop music which have the same type of west African tempo. Jamaican dance is associated more with the music. There are at least 30 distinctive dances and most can trace their roots to their African heritage.
Jamaica People
Like the rest of the Caribbean, the Jamaican people of are a mix of many nationalities. Most Jamaicans are of African descent (76%) due to slavery. Many Jamaicans are a mix of European and African descent (15%). Still others are of East Indian and Chinese descent (5%). Their ancestors were brought to Jamaica as indentured servants. The remaining Jamaicans are of European decent (4%).
