Grand Cayman Beaches, aside from Seven Mile Beach and Rum Point, tend to be iron shore beaches or they have a lot of seaweed. They are on the southern end of George Town, Bodden Town, East End, and the North Side districts. Although these beaches aren't as accessible for swimming they are really scenic.
So what is iron shore? These are black rock formations right at the edge of the shore that extend a little way onto the beach and a little way out into the water. The rock is formed by a combination of limestone and dolomite. The black color is caused by an algae that ate away limestone and left a black stain in the process.
Smith Cove (aka Barcadere Cove) Beach
Smith Cove (aka Barcadere Cove) Beach
This Grand Cayman beach is located on the southern end of the George Town district. It's a beautiful mixture of sand and iron shore. This beach also has some of the best snorkeling I've seen close to shore. I always see a large number of fish, and once I saw a family of squid filtering nutrients out of the water. Primarily, locals go to this beach, but I've also seen the a few tourists. There's a relatively clean bathroom and an outdoor shower. This beach can get a bit crowded when there's a birthday party or family barbecue.
Bodden Town Public Beach
Bodden Town Public Beach
This beach is located in Bodden Town. It has a bit of seaweed, so it's not as nice for swimming. However, it has a number of wooden pavilions that are used to host parties. It also has an interesting aspect. In the distance, the waves break about 70 or 80 meters off shore. By the time the waves do reach the shore, they are very calm. This feature makes this one of the most picturesque beaches in Grand Cayman.
East End Public Beach
East End Public Beach
Located in the East End district, this is by far one of the most pristine public beaches in Grand Cayman. The playground is in great shape, the wooden pavilions are well maintained, and the bathrooms are really clean. This beach is ideal for hosting family outings. This beach also has the same interesting feature as the Bodden Town Beach. The waves break about several meters off shore. It really adds to the calm and serene beach surroundings.
Cayman Cai Public Beach
Cayman Cai Public Beach
This beach is located in the North Side district. It's not ideal for swimming, but it's very close to several homes in the area. When we visited we found families relaxing and playing on the beach. This seems to be a great neighborhood beach with some amenities. It has a wooden pavilion and bathrooms. I imagine many of the locals walk over from their homes and enjoy an afternoon in the sun.
