George Town is the capital of the Cayman Islands. When you arrive, this Grand Cayman town will probably be your first stop. What does one do in this quaint little town? Shop! This town is designed for relaxed tourist style shopping. Take your time looking at the duty free watches, jewelry, or what ever else interests you. When you want to take a break, there are plenty Grand Cayman restaurants to choose from. For your convenience you can stay at a Grand Cayman hotel just in town or nearby on the world famous Seven Mile Beach.
Busy Downtown Area
If you like learning about the history of new places, this town has many historical and interesting attractions. The National Museum is both a natural history as well as cultural history museum. My daughter and I really enjoyed our walk through this museum. I think she enjoyed looking at the animals in the natural history portion of the museum. Upstairs is a children's section, and children maybe four and up can create their own art. If you would like to see more photos of the museum's exhibits, go to National Museum Photos.
The National Gallery is also another interesting stop. What I like about this gallery is they change their displays often, so there is always something new to look at. We've been there a few times, and the last time we were there they has a display of traditional and modern Caymanian art. If you would like to see more photos of the gallery's displays, go to National Gallery Photos.
Shops Along the Water
Other attractions include Fort George, Heroes Square, and Seaman's Memorial. These are basically historical stops that you can encounter as you are walking though George Town. As you take a leisurely stroll along the water, you'll notice the quaint architecture of buildings, the attractions I've listed above, and the ships. Many ships dock here throughout the year including cruise ships and cargo ships carrying freight for local business and residents.
