Fantastic Diving in Grand Cayman
Diving in Grand Cayman is one of the most amazing experiences you'll have on the island. Some of the best dive sites in the world are on this island. These sites include 6000 ft walls, several different types of fish, and colorful coral reefs. Beautiful Grand Cayman sites exist all around the island, and if you arrive by plane you will want to use a Grand Cayman car rental agency to drive to as many sites as possible. If you take one of the many Cayman Island cruises, you will want to arrange a scuba excursion on your ship so that when the ship dock, you are ready to start your vacation.
Grand Cayman vacation packages are more plentiful during the off-season from May to September. These packages usually include a choice of Cayman Island Resorts. Choose a resort that either has a dive operation on site, or can easily make arrangements for you to go diving. In addition, these packages usually include airfare and access to a Grand Cayman car rental agency.
Diving in Grand Cayman
Dive 365 Cayman Islands is a program to add 65 new dive sites in Grand Cayman, 6 new sites to Cayman Brac, and 8 new sites to Little Cayman. This will bring the total number of dive sites to 365 allowing you to dive to a different site every day of the year. In addition, this will allow some sites to be rested periodically so that marine life can flourish undisturbed by humans.
There are 5 zones around each island to coordinate human activity in the water:
- Replenishment Zone - Prohibits the taking of conch and lobster and only allows line fishing.
- Marine Park Zone - Prohibits the taking of any marine life, but line fishing is OK.
- Designated Grouper Spawning Area - No fishing from Nov 1 to March 31.
- Environmental Zone - Prohibits marine life being disturbed in any way.
- No Dive Zone - Protects traditional fishing areas.
Diving in Grand Cayman - Cayman Brac
There's a lot of debate among divers as to which sites are the best. The problem is that the definition of 'best' depends on the diver. Instead, I've listed some of the most popular dive sites in Grand Cayman. They are:
- Trinity Caves - This site is accessed by boat (West Bay) with an average depth of 80 ft. You will see lots of caverns with corals and a wide array of fish.
- Babylon - This site can be accessed by boat or from shore (East End) with an average depth of 60 ft. You will see a 60 ft wall with lots of coral, swim throughs, and fish.
- Wreck of the Balboa - This site is accessed by boat (George Town) with an average depth of 30 ft. This site can only be dived at night because the harbour is too busy during the day.
- Bonnies's Arch - This site is accessed by boat or from shore (West Bay) with an average depth of 40 ft. You will see an archway connecting two coral fingers and loads of fish.
- Tarpon Allay - This site is accessed by boat (North Side) with an average depth of 80 ft. You will see hammerhead and reef sharks as well as stingrays.
